Q1. <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>에 참여하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요? 제작진으로부터 편지를 받았다는 일화가 있는데 사실인가요?

A: 새로운 장르, 보이스 액팅이라는 작업 방식에 대한 호기심이 있었어요. 

그리고 해외에서 큰 사랑을 보내 주시는 팬분들에게 무언가 즐거운 기억을 남겨드리고 싶은 마음이 컸고요. 작품이 주는 ‘사랑’이라는 메시지를 음악과 K-pop을 통해 전하는 방법도 독특하게 다가왔어요. 

프로젝트에 참여하기 전에 매기 강 감독님께서 편지를 보내주셨는데, 그 안에서 저에 대한 따뜻한 관심과 작품에 대한 깊은 애정을 느낄 수 있었어요. 그 진심을 믿었고, 함께 좋은 결과를 만들고 싶다는 마음이 자연스럽게 생겼습니다.

Q2. <케이팝 데몬 헌터스>는 어떤 작품인가요?

A: 정말 많은 매력을 품고 있는 작품이에요. 이 작품은 판타지이면서, 우리 현실과 맞닿아 있는 이야기예요. 제가 좋아하는 한국어 중에 “아름답다”라는 말이 있는데, 그 안에는 “나답다”라는 의미도 담겨 있거든요. 이 작품 속에도 각자가 가진 고유한 아름다움을 받아들이고, 자신만의 특별함을 인정하며, 있는 그대로의 자신을 사랑하자라는 메시지를 담고 있어요. 

Q3. 본인이 연기한 캐릭터 ‘진우’는 어떤 인물인가요? 

A: 진우는 가족들과 함께하기 위해 귀마와 거래하는 위험한 선택을 했고, 그 대가로 영혼을 잃게 돼요. 그럼에도 인간에 대한 애정과 따뜻함을 간직한 채 살아가는 따뜻함을 지닌 인물이라고 생각해요. 그런 점에서 시청자들이 연민과 사랑을 함께 느낄 수 있을 듯 합니다.

Q4. 녹음 방식이 특별하다고 들었어요. 

A: (첫 만남을 제외하고) 제가 한국에 있고 제작진은 미국에 있어서 화상으로 작업을 진행했어요. 녹음 당시에는 마이크 옆에 카메라를 두고, 제 목소리뿐 아니라 얼굴 표정과 움직임까지 함께 촬영했어요. 그렇게 기록된 레퍼런스 영상은 진우라는 캐릭터를 만들 때 캐릭터의 표정과 감정, 움직임을 디테일하게 묘사하는데 반영되었죠. 실제로 완성된 진우의 얼굴과 스타일은 제 모습을 기반으로 한 부분이 있어요. 후드티 같은 의상까지도요. 단순한 보이스 액팅을 넘어서 몸과 표정이 함께 녹아든 작업이었고, 이러한 그런 과정들이 캐릭터에 생명력을 불어넣는 데 중요한 역할을 했다고 생각해요. 이런 과정과 제작팀의 노력을 통해 진우와 제가 동기화 될 수 있었던 던 것 같아요. 

Q5. 매기 강 감독님, 그리고 크리스 애플한스 감독님과의 작업은 어땠나요?

A: 매기 강 감독님, 그리고 크리스 애플한스 감독님과 함께 작업할 수 있어서 정말 영광이었습니다. 애니메이션이라는 장르 자체가 저에게는 처음 접하는 새로운 작업 방식이었기 때문에 낯설고 어려운 부분도 있었는데요, 그럴 때마다 감독님 두 분께서 섬세하고 따뜻하게 이끌어 주셔서 빠르게 적응할 수 있었던 것 같아요. 

예를 들어 감정의 흐름을 목소리만으로 어떻게 전달할 수 있을지에 대해서요. 같은 장면이라도 감정의 농도나 말의 속도, 간격 등을 다양하게 시도해 보게 하시면서, 애니메이션 안에서도 캐릭터가 훨씬 더 입체적으로 살아날 수 있도록 도와주셨던 게 인상 깊었고 자유롭게 표현할 수 있도록 열린 환경을 만들어 주셔서 감사했습니다.

Q6. 진우의 내면 속 악마는 어떤 모습인가요?

A: 진우의 내면 속 악마는 그를 짓눌러온 고통과 죄책감, 그리고 어쩔 수 없던 선택에서 비롯된 고통과 후회로 만들어졌어요. 어쩔 수 없는 결정이었다고 해도, 그 기억들이 계속해서 그를 괴롭히죠.

내면의 목소리는 낮고 무거운 속삭임처럼 다가오며, 늘 옳은 방향을 방해하고 흔들어요.

이런 내면의 어둠을 직면하고 받아들이는 건 결코 쉽지 않지만, 결국 우리 모두가 겪게 되는 과정이라고 생각해요. 그런 시간을 통해 자신을 마주하고, 조금 더 단단한 사람으로 나아갈 수 있다고 믿어요. 

Q 7. 이 영화의 배경이 되는 세계는 어떤 곳인가요?

A: 판타지처럼 보이지만, 자세히 들여다보면 우리가 사는 세상과 닮아 있어요. 선과 악이 공존하고, 사람들의 욕망과 희생이 부딪히는 곳이죠. 그 안에서 K-POP은 희망의 상징처럼 작용하는 존재인 것 같아요.

Q 8. 처음 이 영화를 봤을 때 어떤 기분이 들었나요?

A: 이루 말할 수 없이 뭔가 가슴이 꽉 찬 느낌이 들었어요.

대본을 읽으면서도 재미있다고 느꼈지만, 애니메이션이라는 장르 자체가 저에겐 익숙하지 않았기 때문에, 과연 이게 어떻게 구현될까 상상이 잘 안 됐거든요. 그런데 막상 완성된 영화를 보니, 제가 상상했던 걸 훨씬 뛰어넘는, 정말 믿기 어려울 만큼 아름답고 감동적인 작품이 되어 있었어요. 한 장면 한 장면이 마치 꿈처럼 느껴졌어요.

무엇보다 이 작품을 보게 될 제 팬분들이 있다면, 이 즐거움을 함께 나누고 싶어요. 여러분도 저처럼 이 이야기에 빠져들고, 그 안의 재미와 감동을 함께 느끼시길 바랍니다.

Q 9. 이 영화가 지금까지 보셨던 애니메이션들과 가장 다른 점은 어떤 부분인가요?

A: 감정이 중심이 되는 애니메이션이라는 점이 가장 큰 차별점이었던 것 같아요. 보통 애니메이션에서는 음악이 배경처럼 존재하는 경우가 많은데, 이 작품은 음악과 이야기, 감정이 유기적으로 연결돼 있어서 무대처럼 느껴지기도 했고, 동시에 한 편의 영화이자 퍼포먼스로도 다가왔어요. 이런 구성이 저에게는 굉장히 새롭고 인상 깊었어요.

Q 10. 이 작품을 통해 전하고 싶은 메세지는 무엇인가요?

A: 누구에게나 내면의 어둠은 있고, 때로는 그걸 인정하고 마주하는 용기가 필요하다는 메시지가 전해졌으면 좋겠어요. 그리고 결국엔 자신만의 목소리를 믿고, 나아갈 수 있는 힘을 얻는 이야기라는 점에서, 많은 분들에게 위로와 용기가 되었으면 해요.

Q 11. 애니메이션 영화나 시리즈가 지닌 상상력의 힘에 대해서 어떻게 생각하세요? 

A: 애니메이션은 상상력이라는 한계를 뛰어넘는 장르라고 생각해요. 현실의 제약 없이, 머릿속에 떠오른 모든 것들을 시각적으로 구현해낼 수 있잖아요. 그리고 그 안에는 아주 깊은 감정, 철학, 메시지도 담을 수 있고요. 어른이든 아이든 마음을 울리는 이야기, 그게 바로 애니메이션의 힘인 것 같아요.

From a Director’s Heartfelt Letter to Mastering Voice Acting: Ahn Hyo-seop Becomes a Global Talent

Actor Ahn Hyo-seop is making waves with his voice role in the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters, which ranked in the Top 10 across 93 countries and claimed the No. 1 spot in 41 countries shortly after its release. At the heart of this global success is Ahn Hyo-seop, who voices the lead character, “Jinu.”

KPop Demon Hunters was co-directed by Korean Canadian filmmaker Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans (Wish Dragon), and co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation, known for global hits such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The main voice cast includes Arden Cho as Rumi, Ken Jeong as Bobby, and Lee Byung-hun as Gwima.

The film stands out for capturing both the essence of Korean identity and universal themes. Ahn Hyo-seop’s agency, The Present Company, shared: “K-POP is no longer just a genre; it’s become a central element in shaping global content.” 

Ahn Hyo-seop takes on the role of Jinu, a member of the K-pop boy group “Saja Boys,” delivering all his lines in English. His emotionally nuanced performance, conveyed solely through voice, has earned widespread acclaim and enhanced the film’s immersive experience.

With KPop Demon Hunters, Ahn Hyo-seop expands his range as an actor and further proves his global appeal. Particularly noteworthy is the story of co-director Maggie Kang sending him a handwritten letter inviting him to join the cast, a heartfelt gesture that reflects the production team’s trust and admiration.

[ One-on-One with Ahn Hyo-seop, Voice of “Jinu” in KPop Demon Hunters]

Q1. How did you become a part of this project? Is it true that you received a personal letter from the directors?

A: I was curious about exploring a new genre, voice acting. I also wanted to create something memorable and joyful for fans who have shown so much love from overseas. The way this project delivers the message of love through music and K-pop felt especialy unique and meaningful to me. Before joining the project, director Maggie Kang sent me a letter. Through it, I could realy feel their warmth toward me and their deep affection for the story. I trusted that sincerity, and it naturaly made me want to work with them to create something truly special.

Q2. Give us a brief description of what KPOP DEMON HUNTERS is about?

A: <KPop Demon Hunters> has so many different charms. One of my favorite Korean words is 아름답다, which means “beautiful,” but it also carries the nuance of being “true to oneself.” The story embraces that idea that everyone has their own unique beauty, and that accepting our differences can be empowering. As you folow Huntrix and Saja Boys on their journey, I hope you’ll enjoy their music and feel the energy that comes with it.

Q3. Tell us about your character - what is his story

A: A long time ago, this character made a dangerous but life-changing decision, to make a deal with Gwima in order to be with his family. That choice led to suffering and being trapped in darkness, with his soul under someone else’s control. But despite all of that, I think he’s someone who stil holds onto warmth, and a deep sense of love and curiosity about humanity.

Q 4.  We heard the recording process was quite special.

A: Aside from our very first meeting, we worked remotely via video calls since I was based in Korea and the production team were in the U.S. During recording, a camera was set up next to the microphone to capture not only my voice but also my facial expressions and physical movements. That animation reference was then used to help animate Jinu’s character and his expressions, emotions, and even his gestures. In fact, the final look and style of Jinu were partially based on my appearance and even the hoodie he wears! This went beyond simple voice acting; my body and expressions were deeply integrated into the character.

I think that process really helped breathe life into Jinu, and allowed me to truly synchronize with him.

Q5. Tell us about your collaboration with the filmmaking team - particularly in working with Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans?

A: It was truly an honor to work with Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. Since animation was a completely new creative process for me, there were unfamiliar and challenging aspects at first. But both directors guided me with such warmth and sensitivity that I was able to adjust quickly and really enjoy the process.

For example, they helped me explore how to express emotions using only my voice and how variations in tone, pacing, and silence could all convey something different. Even for the same scene, they encouraged me to try different levels of intensity and timing, which helped bring the character to life in a more multidimensional way.

I’m truly grateful that they created such an open and supportive environment that allowed me to express myself freely.

Q 6.  Describe Jinu’s inner demons - what do they look like?
A: Jinu’s inner demons stem from the pain, regret, and deep guilt of having had to abandon his family. Even if it was a choice he was forced to make, the memories continue to torment him.

That inner voice comes in the form of a low, heavy whisper always there to shake him or steer him away from what’s right. Facing and accepting that darkness is never easy, but I believe it’s something we all go through. It’s through that process that we come to truly face ourselves and grow into stronger versions of who we are.

Q 7. How would you describe the world in which this film takes place?

A: It may look like a fantasy world, but if you look closer, it’s not so different from our own. Good and evil coexist, and people’s desires and sacrifices constantly collide. Within that world, I think K-POP serves as a symbol of hope.

Q 8. How did you feel when you first saw the film?
A:  It’s hard to put into words. I remember feeling completely overwhelmed in the best way. I think that’s what people mean when they say they’re left speechless. I found the script fascinating, but since animation is a genre I wasn’t familiar with, I had a hard time imagining how it would all come to gether. But when I finally saw the finished film, it went far beyond anything I had pictured. It was so beautiful and moving and it honestly felt surreal.

There were so many things that felt possible because it was animation. Every scene felt like I was watching a dream unfold. More than anything, if my fans get to watch this film, I want to share that joy with them. I hope you’ll fall into this story the way I did, and enjoy both the excitement and emotion that come with it.

Q 9. How is this film different from other animated films you’ve seen before?

A:  What stood out to me the most was that this is an animation where emotions take center stage. In many animated films, music often serves as background. But in this film, music, story, and emotion are all organically connected, and it felt more like a stage performance than just an animation. It was a completely new and memorable experience for me.

Q 10. What message do you hope to deliver through this film?

A: I hope the film reminds people that we al have darkness within us, and that sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is face it. At its core, this is a story about finding the strength to trust your own voice and move forward. I hope it offers comfort and courage to those who need it.

Q 11. What do you think of animated movies/shows and their unique power to tell really imaginative stories?

A: I believe animation is a medium that transcends the limits of imagination. It brings to life anything we can dream of unrestricted by reality, yet often rich in emotion, meaning, and depth. Whether you’re a child or an adult, animation has the power to move hearts and tell stories that stay with you. That’s what makes it so powerful. Also, as a longtime fan of Sony Pictures, and a true lover of animation, it was such a joy and a meaningful experience for me to be part of this project.
